The illustrious professor of medicine and surgery, Dr. Alejandro Mackay, has just added one more surgical operation to the many he has been performing with excellent results. This was the difficult operation of a tracheotomy performed on a child barely eighteen months old and in a state where recovery seemed almost impossible; an operation in which he was assisted by the well-known physician Don Rafael Lopez Hernandez, at whose initiative the procedure was carried out. The satisfactory condition of the child, whom we have had the occasion to see, moves us to congratulate the illustrious medical professor who, with exceptional diligence and interest, managed to save the poor creature from certain death. But there is more; yesterday the father of the patient, Don Francisco García Andivia, received a letter in which Dr. Mackay refused to accept any form of professional fees. The gentleman concerned, Mr. Garcia Andivia, requests that we make public his immense gratitude toward the one who saved his son’s life with such skill, acting thereafter with such uncommon generosity. According to our reports, this is not the only victim snatched from death by Dr. Mackay, nor his only act of selflessness, during the diphtheria epidemic which, fortunately, we may now consider to have passed.
