Regatta winners "Pretty"

Bicycle Races and Regatta for La Cinta Celebrations

The races organized by the S. V. O. were most brilliant, with a numerous public attending to witness them. The presidency, formed by beautiful and elegant young ladies, lent great distinction to the festivities.

In the first race, Juniors, a distance of 1,280 metres was run, with Messrs. Acebal and González emerging victorious and obtaining precious silver medals as prizes; and in the second, international (4,200 metres), Messrs. Gómez (of Barcelona), Peralta (of Madrid), and Peris (of Valencia), who were presented with prizes consisting of 300, 100, and 50 pesetas, respectively. Likewise, prizes were obtained in the remaining races, up to the number of six, by Messrs. Marañón, Acebal, Jurado (champion of Huelva), Cartens, and Peris. In the sixth race, Consolation, only Mr. Vázquez (of Cádiz) appeared, who covered 1,280 metres in one minute and fifty-five seconds, for which two minutes and ten seconds had been allotted.

Afterwards, valuable ribbons donated by distinguished young ladies of the locality were contested, the event as a whole being very lively. Two incidents, unfortunately, we had to lament: the fall of Mr. Acebal upon finishing a race, and that of Mr. Gómez during the final lap of the fifth, resulting in contusions which, fortunately, were not serious.

Satisfied indeed must be the organizers of the regattas held on the 7th of the present month in our estuary. The boat-house, property of the Club, was artistically decorated, and the presidency, formed by lovely young women and a great number of invited families, was installed therein.

The first skiff regatta was won by the Pretty, crewed by Manolo de la Corte, coxswain; Carlos Abot, Antonio Tellechea, Emilio Cano, and Manuel Vélez, who were awarded magnificent gold medals by the presidency. The second was won by the opposing side also in the Pretty, crewed by the youths who had previously occupied the Conchita: Manuel Garrido, Manuel Cano, José García, Laureano Hernández, and José Mora, receiving as a prize another five medals, a gift from the Most Excellent City Council.

The Club entertained the select gathering with its traditional splendour. Once the regattas were concluded, the cucaña competitions began, most agreeably entertaining the numerous crowd, while the bands of the Granada Infantry and the Municipal band played select pieces from their repertoire throughout the proceedings.
