On Monday night, the news of the death of Mr. Thomas Morrison, which occurred in Barcelona on Sunday 5th, arrived in Huelva. Two days have passed since we received such unfortunate news, and still, pain overwhelms our souls for Mr. Morrison who we had the honour of counting on as our friend for twenty-two years. He was always the same Christian man to everyone, an exceedingly perfect gentleman in all his actions, and as a businessman in the commercial centres of Europe and America. He opened his business here in Huelva in 1879 and we still to this day remember his staff: Mr. John Mailer, D. Miguel Vega Heredia, D. Gabriel Coromina, D. Antonio Oliveira, and warehouse guard the same as today, D. Juan Rivas. The business soon grew and prospered and it became necessary to open branches in the provinces. Today, as well as headquarters in London and Huelva, they have offices in Barcelona, Bilbao and Almeria.
Just two years ago Mr. Morrison who was feeling unwell, gathered together his family and transformed the company into a limited corporation with all shareholders among family members. For this reason he named his nephews D. Tomas, D. Juan and D. Guillermo Morrison managing directors of the company, being the former the one who really held the reigns of the company since two years ago. Mr. Morrison, in his last visit, commented that “I don’t feel well and I will soon retire, but the company will surely go on for quite some time to come, my nephew Tomas has proved himself well able in business matters, and when I pass away the company will continue on its present course”.
Commercial and charitable Huelva has lost, with the death of Mr. Thomas, one of its most direct and effective benefactors.
We join in the sorrow that, we are certain, all our fellow countrymen must have felt, and we mourn, together with his family, the loss of such a beloved being.
