The Columbus Celebrations at Huelva

Reuter’s Huelva correspondent, telegraphing last night, says:—A picturesque and imposing procession took place this afternoon in connection with the Columbus celebrations, in which the principal authorities and public bodies and the Seville delegate participated.

The large warships anchored off Cadiz are illuminated in order that they may prepare to sail at daybreak for the mouth of the river at Huelva. The Spanish squadron will be composed of four ironclads and eight gunboats and despatch vessels, under the command of the Minister of Marine. The caravel Santa Maria will sail for the open sea with all her canvas spread. The commander says he is perfectly satisfied with to-day’s experiments.

The work of restoring the Convent of La Rábida is well advanced. A column is being erected in front of the convent in honour of Columbus, which, when completed, will be visible from a long distance. The Prefect of Huelva to-day paid a visit to the commanders of the British cruiser Scout and the French cruiser Hirondelle.
