It has a thriving industry in salted fish and flour mills. The municipal territory is mountainous, with extensive pine forests and high-quality limestone quarries. Cereals and oil are also produced.
The town rises gradually from the edge of the Guadiana and the estuary known as La Ribera, up a small hill. At the top lies the oldest neighbourhood, La Villa, while the rest of the town occupies the hillside and is of more modern construction.
The municipal capital consists of 1,020 buildings of one or two storeys, forming clean, paved streets and two magnificent squares. One of the squares, located by La Ribera, currently serves as a promenade and offers scenic views of the Portuguese border.
There are many well-maintained buildings and some older mansions. The town includes several parish churches, a town hall, a prison, a slaughterhouse, a market, a customs house, a telegraph station, a casino, several cafés, and many commercial agencies and establishments.
