The ball held on Saturday night in the sumptuous concert hall of the Hotel Colon was truly admirable. The Recreativo Club, as the organiser of the festivities, ought to feel both satisfied and proud of the event. Following a custom now distinguished in our capital, the invitation was issued for the ball itself, rather than for a commencement at eight or half-past nine in the evening; yet it is certain that at the appointed hour, with a truly English punctuality, the attendees filled the hall and the dancing was able to begin from the very first moments. Waltzes, polkas, lancers, and quadrilles followed one another without a moment’s interruption, provided incessantly by two orchestras, as the young ladies danced to their hearts’ content. At twelve o’clock sharp, the buffet was opened, which was splendid, served with great care and composed of exquisite dishes, the ladies being attended to first and the gentlemen thereafter. Once the buffet concluded, the dancing regained its vigor and continued until the late hours of the early morning, maintaining the same spirit and joy throughout. One detail: the sevillanas were not danced; we regret this, as our local ladies did not wish to grace us with their charm in the classic dance of beautiful Andalusia. Our congratulations to Mr. Adams, President of the Recreativo Club, and to Mr. Palin, Secretary, for the brilliant success of the celebration. With balls such as that of the night before last, the alliance between misty Albion and this land of sun and abundant light shall never be broken. Now we may say, paraphrasing a line by the great Victor Hugo: “Gallantry knows no borders.” Were we English, we would give a “hurrah!” to the Recreativo Club; not being so, we shall say: well done to the English Society!
