Huelva Seamen’s Institute – An Evening’s Entertainment

(Translation and adaptation of articles published in La Provincia)

I had the pleasure last Saturday night of spending an enjoyable evening’s entertainment, generously provided by the Recreation Club, at the Seamen’s Institute on the corner of Calle Odiel and Calle Duque de Victoria. As you are all well aware, our Seamen’s Institute—inaugurated in February last year—is not only a safe haven for the many sailors from different nations visiting the port of Huelva, where they can relax, read the international press, and write letters to loved ones, but also a meeting point for our local community, a place of worship, and a centre of instruction for our children. We are deeply grateful for the care and attention provided by our dear friend Mr Hugh M. Matheson and the Rio Tinto Company Limited in offering Huelva this oasis of moral Presbyterian values.

Highlights of our social evening included the duet graciously performed by Miss Morrison—Thomas Morrison’s niece—and our Miss Birchall, who sang together “Merryman and His Maid.” Mrs Gough once again proved herself to be a dedicated teacher with her two songs, and Mrs Palin was warmly applauded for her piano accompaniment of several pieces. Among the fairer sex, we must also mention Miss Smeaton, who sang “Robin Adair” with great feeling.

The evening was dutifully rounded off, after a full programme of outstanding performances, with La Marcha Real in honour of our Spanish friends, followed by God Save the Queen.

La Provincia newspaper has kindly consented to republish their list of attendees at the event.

Among the ladies present were: Mrs Smeaton, Langdon, Mackay, Palin, Gough, Manito, Crofts, Martinez, Staud, Cartens, Jimenez, Langletz, German, and the young ladies Miss Krantz, Manito, Smeaton, Valero, Marrison, Birchall, Muñoz, and Blackadder.
