Riots at the Rio Tinto Mines – RTCL Public Announcement

(As published in The Glasgow Herald)

“With reference to the telegrams in the newspapers respecting disturbances a the mines of Rio Tinto, the board of the company desire to say that they have received information from the manager this morning to the effect that the disturbances were not created by their workmen, but by some agitators from the outside. A large body of men, to the number of 4000 or 5000, arrived at the mines on Saturday and drove the men from their work. The Governor of Huelva, with troops, arrived on the scene in the afternoon, and, on attempting to address the people, was met with seditious cries and the firing of shots. Finally, the crowd was dispersed by the troops, and some 50 of the rioters were killed. Order seems now to be restored, and it was expected that the workmen would be enabled to resume their work this morning”
