In light of the importance highlighted by the professional and political press regarding the advancements achieved by Dr. Ferrán of Barcelona in the prophylactic methods he employs to prevent individual infection of Asiatic cholera—which causes such devastation upon reaching epidemic proportions—we believe it is our duty, dictated by the sacred mission that a physician must fulfill for humanity and in favor of the knowledge of the rapid progress medicine is undergoing, to submit to you a petition which you will undoubtedly support. This petition proposes to the President of the Provincial Board of Health that a physician from within the medical body of this capital be appointed by agreement of said Board. This individual, appropriately subsidized by the provincial and municipal corporations, should travel to the location where Dr. Ferrán is conducting experiments on the cultivation of cholera-causing microbes and vaccination, and study these trials. Thus, once instructed in this vital matter, he may bring these invaluable and beneficial results to the province at large, thereby placing us on a par with the other provinces of the Peninsula and shielding us from the malignant effects of said microbes.
